PURPOSE:To develop a rare earth element-Co permanent magnet alloy with superior magnetic characteristics by substituting a specified element for part of Cu in an Sm-Co-Cu magnet alloy, casting the alloy so that the structure of the ingot is made columnar, and binding the resulting powdered starting material with resin. CONSTITUTION:An Sm-Co-Cu-X alloy prepared by substituting a metallic element such as Mn or Ni for part of Cu in a rare earth element-Co permanent magnet consisting of 21-28% Sm, Co and Cu is melted in an inert gaseous atmosphere. This molten metal is cast in a mold D in the atmosphere, and by controlling the cooling rate of the molten metal, the cast alloy is solidified so that at least 95% columnar crystals B are contained in the solidified structure. The ingot is subjected to soln. heat treatment, aged, and pulverized. This powder is press-molded with a resin binder in a magnetic field and heated to cure the resin binder. Thus, a permanent magnet composed chiefly of Sm2Co17 type crystals and having superior magnetic characteristics such as superior residual magnetic flux density and coercive force is obtd. |
