PURPOSE:To readily produce a liquid crystal film having spontaneous polarization orientated in the direction of electric field in a wide temperature range, by subjecting a composition comprising a specific monomer unit as a main component to photopolymerization in a state wherein the composition is supported between electrically conductive substrates and electric voltage is applied to the composition. CONSTITUTION:A composition containing one or more monomer units shown by the formula (n is 2-15; X is H or CH3; *C is asymmetric carbon atom.) as a main component and a photopolymerization initiator (e.g. benzophenone, benzyl dimethyl ketal or thioxanthone) is supported on electrically conductive materials or orientated electrically conductive materials, electric voltage is impressed to the composition while maintaining the composition is a liquid crystal state of ferroelectric phase and spontaneous polarization is orientated in the direction of electric field. In this state, the composition is subjected to photopolymerization to give an orientated liquid crystal film having orientated spontaneous polarization. The liquid crystal film has orientated liquid crystal texture not collapsing by impact and temperature change and is useful as a pyroelectric material, piezoelectric material or nonlinear optical material. |
