This installation includes a conveyor consisting of a series of carriages 1, each one capable of receiving a stone P to be polished, laid down flat, and which are equal in number to that of the various work stations 4, 5, 6... 9 plus two. These carriages are driven one after another with a spacing corresponding to the gap between the work stations, in a closed circuit of elongate shape. The various work stations 4, 5, 6... 9 are located one after another on at least one of the two strands of the closed circuit consisting of the carriages 1 of the conveyor. At one of the ends of this circuit a loading and unloading station 15 is provided, at the location of which the corresponding carriage 1 is successively unloaded of the stone P which has just been polished in order to be loaded with another stone P to be polished. This installation is capable of being used for the polishing, while flat, of a series of stones, one after another, at different work stages. <IMAGE>
