A hydraulic steering damper (1), in particular for motor cycles, is described, which has a divided piston having axially limitedly displaceable piston halves (7, 8). Located between the piston halves (7) and (8) is an elastic ring body (33) which, as a function of the speed of the piston rod (3), is radially expanded via the two piston halves (7) and (8) so as to influence the size of a damping-effective annular gap (34) and of frictional engagement with the inner wall of the cylinder (2). As a result of sealing of working chambers (11) and (12) with respect to a compensation space (13), which sealing is dependent on the speed of the piston rod, a simplification with respect to the sealing and an improved volume compensation within the hydraulic steering damper (1) is achieved. Furthermore, two seals (14), which with increasing pressure produce a self-increasing damping frictional force, are provided between the cylinder (2) and the piston rod (3). <IMAGE>
