A furnace for burning carbonate-containing charge (9) has an outer jacket (11) which has a lower shaft part (1) and a part which adjoins the latter at the top, is widened in cross-section relative to the lower shaft part (1) and houses a combustion chamber (2). In order to ensure uniform burning of the charge (9), the furnace interior (19) is formed by a refractory masonry structure (12) which extends over the lower shaft part (1) and over the part of the outer jacket (11) constructed with a widened cross-section relative to said shaft part (1) and has a uniform inside cross-section over its entire height, the masonry structure (12) being supported in the region of that part of the outer jacket (11) with a widened cross-section on the latter by means of supports (14, 15, 16) arranged between the outside of the masonry structure (12) and the outer jacket (11), and in this region burner lances (20) extending into the furnace interior (19) (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
