An adjustable armchair has a seat (10) fixed to a baseframe, a back (30) articulated on said seat, a footrest (50) adjustable at the front as a function of the inclination setting of the back (30), and a pair of lateral arms (40) above the seat (10). Each arm (40) is formed by a longitudinal beam (41) which, at the rear, is articulated directly on the back (30) at a point disposed above the joint between seat (10) and back (30) and is articulated, at its front end, at the very front on the seat (10) via at least one bar (43) in such a way that at the steepest inclination of the back (30) it is aligned parallel to the seat (10) and upon adjustment of the back (30) rearwards is continuously adjustable forwards and downwards with respect to the seat. The back (30) has an extension which extends downwards over its articulation axis. The seat (10) is connected to a lower lever (15), the central portion of which is articulated at the very bottom on the back (30) via a rod (35), the other end of which is connected to the footrest (50) via a rigid rod (55). <IMAGE>
