A method of hybrid seed production comprises cross pollinating male and female parent plants either a) the male plant being resistant to a phytotoxic chemical or b) each parent being resistant to a different phytotoxic chemical, the resistance being attributable solely to a homozygous dominant nuclear marker gene. In case (a) seed from the female plants only and in case (b) all seed is harvested. The harvested seed is dosed with the chemical(s) before planting or after seedling emergence therefrom. The chemical may be a herbicide or an antibiotic e.g. Kanamycin. The marker gene may be introduced by Agrobacterium-mediated transfer or direct DNA uptake or selected in a sematic cell culture transfer protoplast fusion or after inducing plant mutagenesis.
