The power output from a turbine can be increased by using a pump to accelerate the flow of fluid supplied to the turbine. It is claimed that the power to drive the pump is less than the extra power produced by the turbine. The pump inlet duct (5) converges as it approaches the pump (1) and thereby accelerates the fluid flowing to the pump. The pump (1) may be driven directly from the turbine (2) or may be provided with a separate power supply. The duct (5) and the combined pump (1) and turbine (2) may be installed in a barrage or dam.
