For taking up a running thread by means of a flow of suction air, a thread delivery unit is arranged directly in front of the suction device. The thread delivery unit consists of a roller (1) round which the thread loops and which narrows between the thread entry and thread exit. In order to guarantee a stable thread run, the roller consists of two conical portions, of which the first has sliding properties and the second adhesive properties in relation to the thread. <IMAGE>
