The present invention relates to a method of printing on polymeric materials such that the dye or colourant used to make the printed image actually penetrates into the surface of the material being printed. This is achieved by applying an energy gradient to the polymeric material, such that the energy thereof increases in the direction in which it is desired the dye or colourant should penetrate (i.e. away from the printed surface of the material). Such an energy gradient may be achieved by heating the surface of the polymeric material opposite to the surface being printed. For most satisfactory results, dyes or colourants having the lowest possible molecular weights are utilised. It is also preferable to rapidly cool the printed material after it has been subjected to the energy gradient. The technique of the present invention results in a printed image which is as durable as the substrate itself.
|
