<p>The generator (7) is mounted in an underground sump (6). Its drive shaft is connected via a coaxial coupling (8) to a vertical shaft (2) mounted in the hub of a wheel (10). The wheel has a dia. of between 25 and 1O0 metres. The rim of the wheel is connected to the hub by eight radial spokes (13), the spokes and rim being supported by free-running wheels (14) on support rails (15). Four of the spokes have reinforced extensions (17). Four diesel locomotives (18) run on a circular track 81) which is concentric with the wheel. Each locomotive pushes against one of the four spoke extensions. The generator sump is sealed from the outside world by a conical cover (9) which supports the wheel hub (3). The cover is supported by a ring (5) around the upper rim of the sump.</p> |
