PURPOSE:To perform the retrieval of an image at high speed, by generating and filing the image for retrieval with the density lower than that of regular data other than the regular data at a time when image data is filed, and shortening the time to display the data to be displayed at the time of retrieval. CONSTITUTION:A compression regenerator 14 performs data compression on a document (DOC) read from a scanner SCN17 or generated by a word processor or data in which those data are synthesized. A filing device 12 files the data compressed by the compression regenerator 14 as the regular data. Furthermore, it files the image data with the line density lower than that of the regular data. At the time of filing file data, the file data for retrieval is also filed, and the retrieval of a file is performed by regenerating and displaying the file data for retrieval. In such a way, it is possible to perform the retrieval by the image at high speed.
