摘要 720,069. Batteries. RAY-O-VAC CO. Sept. 5, 1952 [Sept. 5, 1951; June 2, 1952], No. 22408/52. Class 53. A dry battery is made by attaching a number of bipolar electrodes Z, C, Figs. 1 and 2, to insulating strips 21, 21<SP>1</SP> by adhesive 34, placing one strip on the other with intermediate manganese dioxide and graphite cakes 19 and electrolyte absorbent pads 18 as shown in Fig. 3. The electrodes Z, C consist of pairs of zinc plates connected by tabs 13, one plate C of each pair being coated with a conductive layer such as a plastic material containing carbon. After the strips 21, 21<SP>1</SP> have been superimposed the edges are stuck together and the strips folded zigzag fashion at the points 41 to form a number of cells in series as shown in Fig. 4, each cell being entirely enclosed in an insulating pocket formed by the strips 21, 21<SP>1</SP>. To form a stack of cells joined in parallel the tabs 13 and strips 21, 21<SP>1</SP> are cut and the cells rearranged to bring all the terminals of like polarity to one side of the stack. A conductor is then soldered to the terminals on each side of the stack. Instead of the two strips 21, 21<SP>1</SP> a single wide strip may be used folded longitudinally to enclose the cell elements. Fig. 7 shows a zinc bipolar electrode having one portion protected from the electrolyte by being sandwiched between an insulating sheet 6 and a conducting sheet 5. The two parts of the electrode are folded over one another with a depolarizer cake and electrolyte and enclosed in a strip of insulating material to form a single cell. A number of cells in series may be formed by securing a number of such electrodes to strips 21, 21<SP>1</SP> as described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4.
