A process based on genetic engineering methods makes it possible to develop inducible virus resistance in plants. The invention further relates to the use of the process and to the plants with inducible virus resistance obtainable by this process, and to their offspring. The invention also embraces chimeric genetic constructs as well as cloning vectors and host organisms, and methods for transferring an inducible virus resistance to plants. Said recombinant DNA molecules are used to "immunise" plants against unwanted viral attack.
