The method and the device according to the invention relate more particularly to the hydraulic proof test at pressures of the order of 100 to 1500 bar of tubes 2 such as those used in the oil industry. It consists in introducing to the end of at least one tube, a sliding shut-off member 12, before connecting it to the pressurised hydraulic fluid source 7. This shut-off member is pushed by the fluid to the downstream end where it is retained by a stop 23. The pressure is then raised to the desired value, in the almost total absence of air. <IMAGE>
