Erosion due to solid particles entrained in the exhaust gas leads to premature wear on parts of the exhaust turbine, especially in internal combustion engines running on heavy oil. The object of the invention is to remove a large part of these particles from the exhaust gas flow upstream of the rotor. Utilising the centrifugal force-assisted separation of a particle-charged layer from the exhaust gas flow, inlet apertures of discharge ducts are provided in the feed duct of the exhaust turbine in the areas with the highest circumferential velocity, by means of which discharge ducts a small partial flow of exhaust gas, nevertheless heavily charged with particles, is continuously led off. The invention can be used in all turbines operated with gases polluted by solid particles, but is especially suitable for exhaust turbochargers of internal combustion engines running on heavy oil.
