By adjusting the operative length of the inlet manifold (4) for a vehicle engine, the fuel and air supply to the engine is adjusted according to the engine speed. The interior of the manifold is divided by internal flanges into helical compartments (5) around an inner cylinder (7) with an inlet opening (9) for each engine cylinder. The size of the openings is adjusted by rotating the inner cylinder to modify the operative length of the compartments. In an alternative design, the rotary inner cylinder carries a sliding plate with openings for the different compartments. The travel of the plate is limited by lugs projecting from the openings. ADVANTAGE - An optimum change is ensured for all speeds.
