714,139. Screw-and-nut steering mechanism. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 10, 1952 [Oct. 18, 1951], No. 9521/54. Divided out of 714,128. Class 80 (1) In a steering gear wherein a rock shaft 162 carries two forked arms 160, 164 engaging roller trunnions on a ball nut 150 which is traversed by a worm 182 on the steering shaft, one side 148 of the nut has a pair of shoulders which lie close to the adjacent surface of the arm 160 so that in the centred position of the gear the nut turns slightly until the shoulder engages the arm 160 and further turning is prevented. Turning of the nut in positions away from the centre is prevented by the reaction of the arms on the roller trunnions. The upper end of the rock shaft 162 has a slot receiving the head of a bolt 178 by which the clearance between the arm 160 and the shoulders of the nut may be adjusted. |
