The invention relates to a device for driving a lubricant pump of an internal combustion engine. A steplessly shifting planetary gearing serves for this purpose, which is coupled to a first transmission element, preferably to the ring gear of the internal combustion engine and to a second transmission element, preferably the sun gear, which is connected to the drive of the lubricant pump, and to a third transmission element, the planet carrier with the planet wheels, which is drive-connected to a regulating pump. The regulating pump, connected to a control valve, serves as control device, which adjusts the transmission ratio as a function of the pressure of the pumped lubricant. With the internal combustion engine idling, the control valve prevents the delivery of lubricant by the regulating pump. As a result the planet carrier is fixed. At higher speeds of the internal combustion engine the transmission ratio is adjusted so as to reduce the speed. A passage in the control valve is opened by the lubricant pressure, thereby allowing the delivery of lubricant by the regulating pump. If the regulating pump turns, however, so does the planet carrier and the lubricant pump works more slowly until the desired lubricant pressure is established.
