A metal expansion dowel, which can be inserted into a bore in concrete, masonrywork or rock, exhibits a single-part or multi-part expansion sleeve (1) which is penetrated by a threaded bolt (2), exhibits an essentially smooth surface free of locking tabs, and can be expanded at its slit plug-in end (9) by means of an expansion cone (3) borne by the threaded bolt. In order that the expansion dowel can be reliably pre-anchored in the bore before end mounting, the invention provides a latching device (12) which is formed on the expansion cone (3) and on the expansion sleeve (1) and snaps in only once the sleeve (1) has reached an intermediate expansion position, said expansion sleeve (1), in its intermediate expansion position, being widened expediently by approximately 1/3 of its maximum expansion range. <IMAGE>
