In order to carry out the combustion of fuels with a high fine-grain proportion in grate furnaces without difficulty, it is proposed to arrange, at the outlet of the fuel funnel and directly above the grate, a controllable metering hopper which extends over the entire width of the grate and supplies the fuel to the grate in front of the combustion space in a relatively loose and air-permeable manner.
