Apparatuses of this type for separating off filterable substances from a liquid are provided with a rotatable filter drum (11) which is submerged in a vessel (10) and which is at least partly surrounded by an enclosing filter belt (18). Such known apparatuses have the disadvantage that they require a permanent drive of the filter drum (11) and are susceptible to breakdown owing to bearings submerged in the liquid. These disadvantages are to be eliminated by the process according to the invention and the corresponding apparatus. In order to avoid bearings lying in the liquid, it is proposed to mount the filter drum (11) overhead in the vessel (10). Furthermore, the filter drum is arranged to be adjustable in height on a pivotable support frame in the vessel (10), as a result of which a periodic drive of the filter drum (11) to clean the filter belt (18) in dependence on the difference of the liquid levels in the vessel (10) and in the filter drum (11) can be controlled.
