PURPOSE:To efficiently perform the smoothing processing without damaging important information like edges by switching the smoothing processing in accordance with a representative value determined by picture data in a window. CONSTITUTION:A representative value determining means 100 determines the representative value by picture data in the window having a prescribed size. Input picture data is smoothed by a smoothing means 102 to eliminate the noise included in input picture data. The user or the non-use of the smoothing means 102 is switched by a switching means 101 in accordance with the representative value determined by the representative value determining means 100. Though switching is performed before smoothing in this case, switching may be performed at the time of output after smoothing. Thus, the smoothing processing is efficiently performed without damaging important information like edges. |
