The described system for transmission of digital moving picture signals includes a coder on the transmitting end, and a decoder on the receiving end, and also has on the receiving end an input buffer memory and a picture memory, the contents of which are updated and continuously fed to a monitor to be reproduced. In this system, synchronization of the transmitting-end coder and the receiving-end decoder, and therefore the transmission of suitable synchronisation signals, are made superfluous, as follows: . The receiving-end decoder is provided with an independent fixed frequency oscillator, the frequency of which is higher than the frequency with which the transmitting-end coder is operated. . A monitoring circuit monitors the degree of fullness of the buffer memory and, if it is about to become empty, stops reading from the buffer memory and feeds the contents of the picture memory, which are not updated, to the monitor again, until the buffer memory has reached a normal state of fullness. e |
