In foundry technology, there is a desire for as low as possible a sulphur content of steel or vermicular graphite iron or spheroidal graphite iron. A simple process for the low-level desulphurisation of the starting melts for the production of steel or cast iron is sought. According to the invention, the pre-desulphurised base iron melt is placed in a holding furnace under a gauge pressure of from 1 to 90 mbar and only drawn off after a residence time of some minutes. It has been found that in this way a low-level desulphurisation to values of less than 0.005% of sulphur can be achieved. Production of steel iron and cast iron.
