Upon receipt of a command for erasing a word, a detector senses whether there is hyphen or not at a print position one letter ahead of the leading letter of a word corresponding to a print head or at a print position one letter behind the trailing letter. A control causes hyphen to be erased on a signal from detector, or keeps hyphen from being erased. Alternatively, the operation of a mechanism is controlled for erasing according to a signal from the detector.
