The automatic brake rod gap adjuster hydraulic drum brakes has pressure rod gap maintained by a composite strut (9,10), located between the respective brake shoes (2,3), parallel to the slave cylinder. The two-part strut incorporates a ratchet, whose teeth (9b,10c) are held in engagement by a tension spring (11). - A second tension spring (9c) applies a prestress to the ratchet, causing relative movement of the teeth in the event of a play in the brake. The curvature of the toothed edges of the strut sections is such, as to effectively increase the length of the strut when the ratchet movement occurs under the prestress provided by the spring.
