Microwave frequency power source

A compact reduced parasitic resonant frequency pulsed power source (20) at microwave frequencies uses a series connected stack of IMPATT diodes (22, 23, 24) with a thick metallic heat sink (25, 26) interposed between each pair of the IMPATT diodes. The effective heat sink of each heat sink is roughly equivalent to the diode radius in length. The effective heat sink length is matched to the effective heat sink of the base heat sink (29), which is located at the bottom of the stack of IMPATT diodes (22, 23, 24). The diodes are operated in a pulsed fashion and the effective heat sink length is matched to the effective heat sink of the base heat sink (29) so that the temperature of the stacked IMPATT diodes (22, 23, 24) track together in time. The heat sinks may be provided with gold or gold-copper alloy plating (27, 28).
