PURPOSE:To obtain the titled mixture useful as an additive for lubricant oil, saving the labor of production, by reacting a raw material mixture composed of phenols, dihydric alcohol, etc., distilling out water and the dihydric alcohol from the reaction product, treating with CO2 and reacting with elemental sulfur. CONSTITUTION:The objective alkaline-earth metal salt sulfide mixture of hydroxyalkylbenzoic acid and alkylphenol can be produced by (1) reacting a reaction raw material mixture composed of phenols (e.g. butylphenol), a dihydric alcohol (e.g. ethylene glycol) and <=0.99g-equivalent (based on said phenols) of an alkaline-earth metal oxide, hydroxide or their mixture (hereinafter abbreviated metallic reagent), (2) distilling out water and the dihydric alcohol until the alcohol content reaches <=0.6mol. per 1mol. of the metallic reagent, (3) reacting the distillation bottom residue with CO2 and (4) reacting the reaction product with 0.1-4.0mol. of elemental sulfur based on 1mol. of the metallic reagent. |
