A filter apparatus includes a single crude gas inlet space (8) and a single clean gas outlet space (9). The two spaces are separated by a mounting plate (5) of refractory material in which there is a plurality of openings (10). An aperture plate (11) of ceramic material with a plurality of ceramic filter elements (12) is positioned on each opening (10). Individual reservoirs (14) deliver reverse-flow cleaning air to the elements (12) of each plate (11). Plate (5) is of refractory concrete sandwich construction, and its periphery is located in a recess (7) in a refractory lining (2) of the housing (1).
