Method of mounting a protective bellows 10 on a housing 1, especially a motor-vehicle steering-gear housing, this bellows having a large-diameter end provided so as to be fixed to the housing, a small-diameter end provided so as to be fixed to a steering linkage rod 9 and deformable folds 15 arranged between the said ends, characterised in that the bellows is enclosed in an axially rigid support 20 while leaving the fold 15 adjacent to the large-diameter end 11 of the bellows to project and then, after having brought a steering swivel joint 7 into contact with the housing 1, in successively producing the simultaneous movement of the bellows 10 and of the support 20 along the linkage rod 9 in order to compress the said fold 15 in contact with the swivel joint 7 and a thrust of the support 20 in contact with the swivel joint 7 until the end of the bellows 10 is immobilised against the housing 11.
