PURPOSE:To make a spool light weight by impregnating optical fiber cable shaped to a coil with a shape retaining agent. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber spool is formed by impregnating a shape retaining agent (A) into a coil-shaped optical fiber cable having a hollow part 2 in the inside. A soln. of a plastic such as ethylene/vinyl compd. copolymer, etc., solution of gelatin, or cold setting silicone rubber, etc., may be used pref. for the shape retaining agent A. Further, the cable 1 is preferred to have a coating layer comprising fiber-reinforced plastic. When the obtd. spool is used for a tether cable 38 connecting a mother ship 31 with, for example, an unmanned submersible 35, the submersible 35 can be submerged quickly because of light weight of the cable permitting easy veering away of the cable. |
