In a thermal printing device having a thermal print head (1) exhibiting a multiplicity of heating elements located adjacently in a line (2) for printing on a recording medium (6) which can be moved along the thermal print head (1) transversely to the line direction, if appropriate with interposition of an ink carrier (7), precise determination of the presence of the recording medium (6) in the region of the printing zone formed by the heating elements is to be made possible. Laterally adjacent to the line (2) of heating elements, a reflection light barrier (8, 9) is arranged with said heating elements on a line flush with the thermal print head (1) in the path of the recording medium (6). The new device can be used as a thermal printer with a linear recording head (parallel printer). <IMAGE>
