<p>An apparatus (10) and method for cutting grooves (140) on the edges of an already formed road (60). Each of a plurality of toothed cutting wheels (40) revolves about a substantially vertical driving shaft (32). Simultaneously, each cutting wheel (40) (attached to a respective rotary shaft (44)) revolves about its own longitudinal and substantially horizontal axis. The apparatus (10) is moved along a road (60), near an edge (62) thereof, thus giving rise to one linear motion and two rotary motions. Sequentially, each cutting wheel (40) enters an edge (62) of the road (60) from a region beyond the road edge (62), due to a slight tilt of the plane which contains the cutting wheel rotary shafts (44). The resultant grooves (140) are deepest at the road edges (62) and then gradually diminish to zero depth, the grooves (140) being arcuate and parallel to each other. With the plane containing the cutting wheel shafts (44) completely horizontal, the apparatus (10) can cut rain drainage grooves in a raised marking strip on the road (60) or can remove bumps from the road (60).</p> |
