The subject is a method and a furnace for heating slabs, ingots, billets, sheets and similar products, which are transported through the furnace chamber by a roller-hearth or roller walking-beam system. The conveying rollers 15 are arranged on both sides of the furnace chamber 10 externally on the side walls 11 of the furnace so as to be movable to and fro transversely to the conveying direction of the products to be heated and are moved through suitable wall openings 18 into the furnace chamber 10 to position underneath the products 13 to be heated, only for the short time of transporting the products to be heated. On lifting the conveying rollers 15 or lowering the support blocks 14, the conveying rollers 15 take up the products 13 to be heated, in order to move them on by rotation. Immediately after this transporting operation, the products 13 to be heated are taken off the conveying rollers 15 by opposite vertical relative movement of the support blocks 14, so that the conveying rollers 15 are able to move back into the open into a cooling rest position. This conveying-roller arrangement outside the furnace chamber causes relatively little stress and wear of the supporting-roller arrangement, as it has only short residence times in the hot furnace chamber 10, but always long cooling-off phases in between. Also, the water-cooling installation which is otherwise customary for the conveying-roller train in the furnace chamber is dispensed with. <IMAGE>
