A slip-proof element (1) comprises a base material (2) having an array of slip-proof teeth (3) on the upper surface thereof. These teeth are formed by an etching process whereby an upper face (4) of the teeth defines an acute angle with the side face (5) of the teeth. Consequently, the contact surface pressure of an object is relatively small. In the etching process an array of protective material is formed on the etchable substrate and etchant is applied to the substrate whilst the etchant and the substrate are in physical motion relative to one another remaining portions of protective material from the substrate being removed. <IMAGE>
