A device for clamping material test pieces in testing machines, with at least one clamping head which is fixed on a cross-yoke, a traverse or the like, is to be designed so that disturbing deformations or cross-forces are avoided on the test piece during clamping. This is achieved by arranging the clamping head (5) on the cross-yoke (3) movably in the cross-direction, so that it can be aligned with the test piece (6). The cross-mobility can be produced by connecting the clamping head (5) to a clamping device which is arranged on the cross-yoke (3) and whose clamping effect can be equalised by supplying pressure means between the clamping surfaces. <IMAGE>
