PURPOSE:To automatize the discrimination of the type of a printing medium by providing a character projecting processor, a counting device, a storage device and a collating device and executing a decision as a medium type to correspond to this printing range when coincidence is obtained by the collating device. CONSTITUTION:A projection processing is executed to image data read from a medium by a character projection processor 7 with the units of characters of character rows and character columns and the central position of both edges characters are respectively obtained. Next, a bit number between the central positions of both edges characters of rows and columns is counted by a counting device 8, the printing range of the medium of plural types stored to a storage 9 successively reads the bit number and the bit number counted by the counting device 8 and the bit number read from the storage 9 are successively collated by a collating device 10. When the coincidence is obtained by the collating, since it is decided that the medium corresponds to this printing range, the type of the medium can be automatically discriminated. |
