Hydroxyalkyl polyethylene glycol ethers of the general formula (I)

in which
R<1> is hydrogen or a straight-chain alkyl radical with 1 to 16 C atoms,
R<2> is a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical with 4 to 8 C atoms,
R<3> is hydrogen or an alkyl radical with 1 to 16 C atoms and
n is a number from 7 to 30,
with the proviso that the total number of C atoms in R<1> and R<3> is 6 to 16, and mixtures of a plurality of such compounds are used in rinsing agents together with other additives normally used in such agents.
