PURPOSE:To accurately identifying the rich or lean region of fuel with a simple construction detecting an electromotive force by covering a negative electrode with a porous layer and a positive electrode with an oxygen accumulated layer after they are arranged on both sides of an oxygen ion conductor facing each other. CONSTITUTION:A negative electrode 8 and a positive electrode 9 are provided on both sides of an oxygen ion conductor made of an inorganic oxide such as ZrO2 and covered with a porous layer 10 and an oxygen accumulated layer 11 to form an oxygen sensor. A voltage is applied to a sensor 15 from a power source 14 through a current detection circuit 16 and a switching circuit 17. The terminal voltage of the oxygen sensor 15 is compared with a reference voltage by a voltage comparator circuit 20 and the output signal thereof is inputted into a second input terminal of a bistable circuit 21. When with the switching circuit 17 is closed, the atmosphere is changed from a lean to rich state, the current of the sensor 15 is inverted and inputted into the bistable circuit 21 via a current inversion circuit 19 and the switching circuit 17 is opened to halt the output 18.
