PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for producing a developer for heat-sensitive recording paper in good yield, by reacting phenol with sulfur in the presence of a catalyst selected from alkaline metal hydroxides, sulfides and hydrosulfides. CONSTITUTION:Phenol is reacted with sulfur in the presence of a catalyst selected from alkaline metal hydroxides, sulfides and hydrosulfides in a polar solvent, such as methyl alcohol, at 70-250 deg.C under 0-50kg/cm<2>G pressure for 0.5-20hr to afford the aimed substance. The phenol is used in an amount of preferably 0.5-2mol. based on 1mol. phenol and the catalyst is used in an mount of preferably 0.01-0.25 equiv. expressed in terms of alkali metal based on 1mol. phenol. The solvent is used in a volume of preferably 50-1,000ml based on 1mol. phenol. |
