When a bundle (1) of valuable documents e.g. cheques, bank notes, etc. is placed in the storage unit input aperture, it is activated by a feeder mechanism so that the documents, one after another, are fed longitudinally - short end first - on to a transport track comprising rollers, belts or guide rollers at a speed of approx. 10 per second. The documents then pass authenticity detectors (12, 122, 123), and a guide (13) which adjusts them to the correct position prior to passing a size measurer (14), a printing unit (15) which imprints data on specific types of documents, e.g. cheques, and a control device (16) which ensures their correct passage and controls a subsequent gripper (17). The gripper moves the documents from the transport track of the upper part of the storage unit to that in the lower part, dependent upon the results from the value and authenticity detectors and the control device. Documents which pass the gripper without being moved to the transport track in the lower part of the unit are moved on to a feed-back chamber (18) for return to a customer or cashier. |
