PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as an intermediate for emulsifying agent, dispersing agent, rust-proofing agent or textile softener or the like in good yield, by reacting primary or secondary amines with formamide in the presence of an acid type Raney nickel catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A primary amine or secondary amine is reacted with formaldehyde using a Raney nickel catalyst adjusted to acidic side of pH 2-5 at 3-50kg/cm<2> and 80-180 deg.C, preferably at 3-20kg/cm<2> and 100-150 deg.C to provide the aimed product. The catalyst is prepared by developing a Raney alloy and then treating the resultant Raney-nickel-water slurry while stirring so as to become pH 2-5 using an organic acid such as acetic acid. The above-mentioned reaction is carry out using 0.5-2% catalyst as solid content of Raney-nickel metal based on the amine. |
