Polymers of compounds of the form: <FORM:0777545/IV(a)/1> where R is halogen or a methyl or ethyl radical and n is an integer from 0 to 2 are plasticized by 0.2 to 4.0 per cent of a 1,1-diarylethane containing 1 or 2 methyl or ethyl nuclear substituents. Specified plasticizers are 1,1-ditolylethane, 1,1-dixylylethane and 1,1-bis-(ethylbenzene) ethane. The polymers may be of styrene, chlorostyrene, bromostyrene, dichlorostyrene, di-iodostyrene, methylstyrene, ethylstyrene, dimethylstyrene and diethylstyrene, and may contain acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ethacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, ethacrylamide, vinyl formate, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloroacetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl bromopropionate, vinyl stearate, allyl acetate, allyl propionate, allyl chloroacetate, allyl benzoyl benzoate, methallyl acetate, allyl laurate, diallyl phthalate, diallyl succinate, diallyl maleate, methyl isopropenyl ketone, ethylvinyl ketone, propylvinyl ketone, phenylvinyl ketone, vinyl chloride and vinyl bromide. The plasticizers may be added to the monomers before bulk polymerization in one or more stages, e.g. at 100 DEG and 130 DEG C., in the presence of catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide and tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, and modifiers, e.g. decyl mercaptan. Dyes, pigments and other additives may be present. The polymers may be cast or moulded. |
