PURPOSE:To enable the accurate detection of a distance by detecting a perspective point from the spatial features of a scene in front of a vehicle and by determining an angle of elevation/depression of the optical axis of an optical picture information generating means on the basis of said point, so as to detect the distance to a specified position. CONSTITUTION:A picture signal obtained from a TV camera 6b is stored into an image memory 5a through an A/D converter 6c and also supplied to CRT 4b through a CRT driver 4a. CPU 1 extracts, for instance, a white line demarcating a vehicle running zone of a road, from the spatial features of an image stored in the image memory 5a, so as to detect a perspective point. From this point, an angle of elevation/depression of the TV camera 6b is determined and thus a distance to a specified position is detected. |
