Known devices of this type for lifting and lowering large containers have toothed rack winches which can be attached to the corner fittings of the large container by means of extension arms and connection beams and, when actuated, can be raised and lowered along supports for the large container. To move the large container, the supports can be provided with running wheels at their lower ends. When being driven, the supports not only have to support the weight of the large container on the running wheels, but they are also loaded by additional transverse and bending forces. In order to avoid this, the connection beams 13 are mounted, according to the invention, so as to be movable in their axial direction, but fixed in terms of rotation in wheel brackets 31, and the supports 23 are supported on said wheel brackets 31 when being driven. For this purpose, the toothed rack winches 19 are connected to the connection beams 13 by means of upper extension arms 15. <IMAGE>
