A suction device for paint spray booths is proposed, which is provided with at least one suction fan (14, 15) driven by an electric motor (12, 13) and with a holding device (20) serving for hanging up a spray gun (21) or the like. Said holding device (20) is coupled to an electric switch which is connected, via a power-reduction circuit, to the at least one electric motor (12, 13). If the spray gun (21) is hung up in the holding device (20), the electric switch is operated and as a result the motor power, and thus the fan power, is reduced. In this manner, by means of a simple device which can be easily retrofitted, a reduction of the heating energy requirement and of the electrical energy requirement is achieved in work pauses or after completion of the spraying operation. <IMAGE>
