For the purpose of optimally measuring the electric energy available for heating purposes in a motor vehicle electrical system having a generator (4) and battery (8), a first heating resistor (1) is situated between the generator (4) and battery (8), while by contrast a second heating resistor (2) is situated in parallel with the battery (8). Connected in parallel with the first heating resistor (1) is a contact (5) which, triggered by a heating controller (13), is open only when the battery voltage is above its desired value. Situated in series with the second heating resistor (2) is a second contact (6), which is triggered in the closing sense by the heating controller (13) only if the current required by the privileged consumers is smaller than the current generated. <IMAGE>
