In a turn-in apparatus for a machine for producing book covers, turn-in systems are used for turning in the front edge and turning in the rear edge, each consisting of a turn-in strip (13; 13') which extends transversely to the direction of passage, is tiltably mounted, is controlled as a function of travel and, together with an assigned supporting strip (14; 14'), forms a clamping tool. In this arrangement, the turn-in strips (13; 13') are so controlled that, in order to raise the cover material (1a), they move along upwards, respectively, the front and back lateral surface of the cover boards (1b) and, after supporting of the cover unit (1) by the supporting strips (14; 14'), they move counter to the direction of passage in order to turn over the cover material (1a) and press it onto the cover board (1b) for the turning-in of the front edge, or in the direction of passage for the turning-in of the rear edge, at a speed which is higher than the running speed of the cover unit (1), and the cover unit (1) is held clamped between the turn-in strip (13; 13') and the supporting strip (14; 14').
