A lifting beam (13, 14) serves to handle freight containers. The lifting beam (13, 14) has a part that can be inserted into an opening in the freight container, the axial length (L) of which part is greater than the clear width of the opening, and hoisting gear can be attached to it. So that the lifting beam may be fixed in the opening simply and securely locked there, the part is variable in its axial length (L), and it has headpieces (25, 26) on its free ends which fit around an edge (44) of the opening (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
